Our journey in Saint Bernards started with a book I read, "The Call of the Wild” by Jack London, for a school book report when I was in High School. This wondeful story is about "Buck", a 150 pound dog that was living a serene life on a beautiful homestead. Buck's mother was a Scottish Shepherd and his father, Elmo, was a large Saint Bernard. After being stolen from his home he finds himself on a path of turmoil and survival and his life was changed forever. We highly suggest you read the book to learn the rest of this great story. Most books of "The Call Of the Wild" have on their cover pictures of Buck being represented by a Wolf or other similar looking dogs. The book my father gave me to read was an old paperback with a picture of a Saint Bernard on the cover. As I read the book and fell in love with Buck, I always imagined Buck as a true Saint Bernard. The qualities Buck exhibited in the story were nobility, intelligence, and his love and devotion to his owner. These are the qualities of a true Saint Bernard.
